As the cartoon above illustrates, even the man that the GOP has nominated to run for president is part of the problem, that the "99%" (or at least half) doesn't even care and will still vote for him. This seems asinine to me. Somehow the republican party has convinced people that he is the solution to our economic woes, yet he is, and was a part of the problem. Romney has a record of growing corporate entities by cutting jobs and increasing gains, while paying less taxes and avoiding responsibilities by keeping his money in offshore accounts. How will this man help turn our countries economy around?
In Noah's article he shows the reader that this latest boom of economic growth is closely related to that of the early 20th century. During the industrial the united states saw a large increase in wealth, yet a large majority of that wealth was held by the 1%, about 18% of it. Sound familiar? It should, because it has only gotten worse. Now, after the last three decades of economic growth the 1% accounts for 24% of the wealth in this country. Why does this matter? Because directly after the industrial era, (excuse my language) the "shit hit the fan" and our country went into the great depression. This is eerily similar to what is happening in the US today.

Colby, i enjoyed how you put a spin of humor on a dry topic and made it easy to understand. I appreciate your cut to the chase, less is more approach to your blog posts. I have just a couple sugestions though; because your writing is straight to the piont i would like to see a larger font, i believe it would make the text a little eaiser to read and fill up more space. Also, if you could hyperlink you article it would be nice for the reader to be able to access your source. Overall i like it and keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteJust finished your article and you seem to have a very similar view to alot of people in our area. I would like to comment on a few good points you made if thats alright.
ReplyDelete"Yet the answer seems so simple to me, greed. The people in high places, with wealth just continue to want more of it. We live in a corporate world now and unfortunately it even seems to influence the way our government operates."
This statement is very true. But something you can't forget is that Greed is what drives humans. If people were content where we were then we would be in the stone age.
Greed fules people to strive for better things, for themself, their family, and whoever else. If people were not greedy then explorers wouldn't of came to American looking for gold and none of us would be here today!
".... even the man that the GOP has nominated to run for president is part of the problem, that the "99%" (or at least half) doesn't even care and will still vote for him."
Weather I agree or not doesn't matter, what matters is if your trying to sway people, this isn't convinsing. I as reader would rather see something conving to back your side of the story. But if your just trying to flame, let me get my torch!
"while paying less taxes" I beleaved his tax records were release. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/romney-2010-tax-return.html) Thats the link. Use some facts ! like he paid only 13.5%!
I love all the stats in the last paragraph, but don't end it this way! I would like to know a solution or suggestion, what you would do? It could be anything like ... lets raise the taxes on everyone who makes over 1 million dollars to 40%.
Thanks for the post!
Colby
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much; this is the first time in a very long time that I got to hear something this serious in a humorous context. It was easy to understand and follow. I loved the pictures, especially the one with Romney in the car, and the 99% on the roof like his dog.
That made me laugh.
"Yet the answer seems so simple to me, greed. The people in high places, with wealth just continue to want more of it. We live in a corporate world now and unfortunately it even seems to influence the way our government operates." I agree yet disagree with this statement I believe greed is what is getting us into so much trouble.
ReplyDeleteI however do not agree that it is only the 1%'s fault. We all play are part in this nations greed. We the people are asking for this, and it is being provided. If it is to change though we all need to STOP CONSUMING (pardon my language) shit we dont need.
We all need to wake from this delusional world of consumption. Im not saying to stop buying frivolous items. Im just saying stop buying all the frivolous items.
Untill recently I was this way but slowly i am degressing in my need for consumption.
Okay I think i kind of got off topic but I think you supported your point well and left room for others to argue theirs thank-you
Mitrovitch:
DeleteYou are right on, I do not believe that it is 100% the 1%'s fault (lol) Our country is blind to the effects of our over consumption, every class in our country seems to be completely "helpless" and expects to waited on 'hand and foot'. Be it going out to eat, buying every meal pre-packaged and ready, to buying every technology known to man that will do the job for you. Everyone wants to just BUY what they need and the "1%" and others are the ones that are cashing in on it. These Corporations are using the government to make more money, and it is making the problem worse. Take for example Monsanto, part of the 1%, who started making their millions with government subsidies from "Farm bills". Follow the link: Millions against Monsanto Anyhow, it is a major problem for our society and if it doesn't stop or slow down then eventually our economy will crumble.
Colby,
ReplyDeleteWOW.. that is all I have to say! You have done an impressive job making such a boring, dry if you will, topic into something easily understandable and humorous. I specifically love the cartoon. There are a few things that I would suggest to do to your post to make it even that much better, first would be to have a hyperlink to the actual article found on the internet, next would be to NOT END IT THAT WAY!! have a great way of saying how it should be done, or what you would do to fix the issue.. Seeing your bloggind shows you have it in you. Thanks for sharing!!
FINALLY! A political topic that doesn't put me to sleep. Very well done with keeping the reader interested and in tune with your arguement. Keep it up!
